Letter: A hero lived among us

South Salt Lake Police Chief Jack Carruth addresses the crowd gathered for a candlelight vigil Dec. 2, 2018 at the Columbus Community Center in Salt Lake City for Officer David Romrell, a South Salt Lake police officer killed in the line of duty Nov. 24th when he was struck by a car driven by a fleeing suspect. Several hundred members of the community attended the vigil including family, friends, South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood and representatives from the Utah Highway Patrol, Unified Police and Unified Fire.

All throughout the week, glorious American flags have reigned in our neighborhood, distinctively placed with much honor and recognition of an American hero — Officer David Romrell.

Decorative blue ribbons mingled with black, gracing the trees, reminding us of sacrifice, bravery and a noble action on our behalf. Unaware that this guardian of our safety lived among us for only four short months, we now can only praise and honor him with endless gratitude. For now, the constant sight of those wonderful flags jolts my heart with sorrow and great pride.
