Letter: Migrants are human scapegoats

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) U.S. Senate candidate Jenny Wilson holds a news conference in Salt Lake City, Thursday Aug. 2, 2018, to announce her vision for immigration reform. At right is Saida Dahir.

The June 23 Opinion section tells of a despicable time in our nation’s history. Concentration camps? In our country? Yes!

National leadership refuses to solve the most recent immigration issues making migrants human scapegoats. Dreamers still live with uncertainty. The dastardly dehumanizing hold on human life in our country escalates with the lack of moral, legal and ethical leadership at the national level. This includes our own Utah congressional delegation stoically sitting as human lives are destroyed.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson stands apart in leadership with effective efforts in addressing immigration in our own community. But, stilted by inaction at the national level, action at the local level is slowed. And all the while suffering people, including children, are victims of a broken system in a country we hail as a land of opportunity.

Please, congressional members, hear this plea to write, pass and enact legislation to enable migrants to legally enter our country. It is our moral, ethical and legal obligation.
