Pam Bondi is out. Mike Lee is in?
After President Donald Trump announced that he was firing Bondi as attorney general, rumors and reports began swirling about who could be the next pick to lead the U.S. Department of Justice.
“Pam Bondi is a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend, who faithfully served as my Attorney General over the past year,“ Trump wrote on social media when announcing Bondi was out at the Justice Department.
Trump, The New York Times reported, had grown frustrated with Bondi’s performance at the DOJ.
Utah’s senior U.S. senator, Mike Lee — a Tea Party Republican who went from trying to stop the GOP from nominating Trump in 2016 to later comparing the impeached president to “Book of Mormon” hero Captain Moroni — is being floated by some as a potential attorney general pick.
Several of Lee’s colleagues in the Senate would like Lee, an attorney, to be Trump’s next top law enforcement official, NOTUS reported.
The White House did not respond to NOTUS’s request to comment on senators pitching Lee as a potential nominee.
The Utah senator was shortlisted, but not picked, during Trump’s first term as a Supreme Court justice nominee.
Lee’s office did not respond Friday to questions on whether the senator was interested in being the next attorney general.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Lee posted to social media overnight Thursday.
Both Lee and Utah Sen. John Curtis voted to confirm Bondi as attorney general. Trump’s next nominee will also have to be approved in the narrowly divided U.S. Senate.
Until a new attorney general nominee is picked, Trump’s former personal attorney, Todd Blanche, will lead the agency that has made retribution against the president’s political enemies a priority during his second term.
“[O]ur Deputy Attorney General, and a very talented and respected Legal Mind, Todd Blanche, will step in to serve as Acting Attorney General,” Trump said in the same social media post in which he announced Bondi’s firing.
And while it may be a little early, partisans and a prediction market are already speculating on who will lead the DOJ next.
On Kalshi, a platform that allows people to bet on the chance that something will happen or not, betters predict Lee Zeldin, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, at being 55% likely to follow Bondi. Blanche follows with 30% and, as of Friday morning, Lee was at 2% in the market titled ”Who will be Trump’s next Attorney General?“
On their show ”Pod Save America,“ hosts Jon Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer, both former staffers to President Barack Obama, discussed Bondi’s firing and who could be Trump’s next attorney general.
“I’ve seen reports that Trump wants EPA administrator Lee Zeldin. I’ve heard Jeanine Pirro might be an option,” Favreau said on the episode of the podcast posted early Friday morning.
“I saw a report that some Republican senators want Mike Lee,” he added. “God help us.”
Pfeiffer, later in the podcast, joked he thinks the push for Lee is “directly related to Republican senators wanting to spend less time with Mike Lee.”
Lee also did not respond to a request to comment on Favreau’s remarks.
