One man is in the hospital, another is in jail after a road rage incident in a Utah parking lot

Victim is seriously injured after being dragged 50 feet, but is expected to survive.

A Bountiful man has been arrested after he reportedly intentionally ran over another man in a Target parking lot.

According to police, the 44-year-old suspect, who was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck, was involved in “some type of driving altercation” with the 20-year-old driver of a Mitsubishi Lancer in the parking lot of a Walmart at 221 W. Parrish Lane shortly after 8 p.m. Monday. The victim and the suspect drove to the parking lot of the nearby Target at 200 N. Market Place Drive, and the victim got out of the Mitsubishi.

Security video shows the truck accelerate, hit the victim and drag him for eight parking stalls — about 50 feet — before driving away “at a high rate of speed,” according to a probable cause statement. Police located the pickup truck with the suspect and his two children still inside.

The suspect told police the victim had followed him into the Target parking lot, pointed a gun at him and his children and tried to open his truck’s doors, so he left “in fear” and “did not know he had run over the victim,” according to the probable cause statement.

Security video shows the suspect following the victim into the parking lot. No gun was seen on the video, no gun was found in or near the Mitsubishi, and neither witnesses nor the suspect’s children mentioned a gun.

The suspect’s children told police their father “got really mad and ran the driver of the white car over.” The victim is hospitalized with internal bleeding and multiple broken bones — including ribs and his pelvis — but is expected to survive, police say.

The suspect was booked into the Davis County jail for investigation of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident. He is being held without bail.
