Kelley O’Hara will not play for Utah Royals in NWSL fall series

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Royals defender Kelley O'Hara speaks about her World Cup experiences at a news conference in Sandy on Wednesday July 17, 2019.

The Utah Royals FC will be without one of its main players again in another restart to the National Women’s Soccer League season.

Defender Kelley O’Hara, who is also a defender for the U.S. Women’s National Team, has officially opted out of the NWSL fall series scheduled to start on Sept. 5, per a Royals spokesperson.

O’Hara’s decision comes less than two weeks after a reported trade had her leaving URFC for the Washington Spirit. Since then, however, it appears those talks have stalled, per the Washington Post.

O’Hara appeared in two of Utah’s five games during the NWSL Challenge Cup — hosted by the Royals in Utah — and played only 64 minutes. The 2020 season is her third with the Royals since the franchise started play in 2018.
