A missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Utah has been struck by a car and killed.
Aleki Langi, 18, was a member of a Magna congregation of the Salt Lake City-based church and started his mission in March, a news release said. He had been temporarily sent to a mission in Charlotte, North Carolina, while awaiting a visa so he could start his assignment in Kingston, Jamaica.
According to the church’s release, the driver of a car apparently lost control and veered onto the sidewalk Thursday, hitting Langi and another missionary. The other missionary suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital,“ church spokesperson Sam Penrod said. A third mission companion was not hurt.
A report from Charlotte TV station WCNC said the three missionaries were on their bicycles when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it went on the sidewalk. Police said the driver fled the scene, according to the TV report.
“We extend our deepest condolences and love to Elder Langi’s family, friends, and fellow missionaries during this difficult time,” Penrod said. “We pray that they will each feel the Savior’s comfort and peace as they mourn.”
