Letter: Imagine what would happen if getting a driver license required a demonstration of the ability to ride five miles on a bicycle
(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Bicyclists ride the bike trail along 900 South, on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025.
Jason Lane’s recent op-ed about cycling fails to mention one hard truth: motorists don’t care about “right of way” laws, they only know the “right of mass” law.
Imagine what would happen if getting a driver license required a demonstration of the ability to ride five miles on a bicycle. Car-bicycle interactions would drop to zero, traffic infrastructure would change radically, our health would improve, and, above all, tens of thousands of new jobs would be created. You know, real jobs for people living in the sprawl.
