Letter: Churches should be helping the homeless

FILE - In this Jan. 16, 2018, file photo, president Russell M. Nelson looks on following a news conference, in Salt Lake City. The president of the Mormon church is asking people to refrain from using "Mormon" or "LDS" as a substitute for the full name of the religion: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018. Why are there any homeless people In Utah?

A Salt Lake Tribune article from September 2014 states:

"Salt Lake County has one LDS chapel for every 1.3 square miles, while Davis is only slightly behind with one for every 1.4 square miles. Utah County — which is larger geographically — has one for every 4.6 square miles.”

One may question why these resources are not being used to house the homeless population, given that they are only used on Sunday and a couple of nights of the week for Scouting and Mutual (is that still a thing?), etc.

If you claim to be only true church of Jesus Christ on the Earth, you may want to check out what he had to say about the poor and homeless among us. Jesus was pretty keen on taking care of them all.

Shame on ye all for not doing all you can to help these poor folks.

Dave Teal, Holladay
