2 dead in apparent murder-suicide at Salt Lake City business

The shooting unfolded Sunday afternoon.

(Salt Lake City Police Department) Salt Lake City police investigate a workplace shooting that left two men dead on Sunday, March 3, 2024.

A man killed a coworker before fatally shooting himself Sunday in an apparent murder-suicide at a Salt Lake City workplace, police said.

Police first received a report of a man with a gun at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Varex Imaging Corporation, located at 1678 S. Pioneer Road. When officers arrived, they found Hay Ly, 61, dead inside the building and Miller Bin, 56, dead outside.

According to police, investigators suspect that Bin shot Ly inside, then shot himself in the parking lot. A gun was found near Bin’s body.

Varex, which manufactures imaging components and processing solutions, confirmed that the two who died were both employees there. Salt Lake City police Chief Mike Brown said detectives are “working to determine a motive.”

Both the police department and the company have made social workers and counselors available to workers who were on the job Sunday when the two men died.

“The psychological trauma experienced by witnesses of workplace violence can have a very significant and lasting impact,” Brown said in a statement.

Anyone with information about the investigation may call 801-799-3000, police said.
