Fashion Place mall shooting leaves one injured

Gunfire occurred five years to the day after a gang shooting at the popular Murray shopping center.

One person was injured in a shooting Saturday at Murray’s Fashion Place mall parking lot.

The shooting occurred between “two groups of people” in the east-side parking lot of the shopping center at about 10:50 a.m., Murray police spokesperson Kristin Reardon said Saturday afternoon. An individual within one of the groups suffered minor injuries in the shooting, Reardon said, and was treated at a hospital.

Several persons of interest are in custody, Reardon said, but she could not provide further information on the groups involved. The mall was locked down during the shooting, but by about 12:30 p.m., it was operating normally — save for police tape near The Container Store.

Reardon said the shooting caused property damage to nearby cars in the lot and to The Container Store building itself. Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson happened to arrive at the mall shortly after the shooting, according to a social media post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Other than a few stores that closed for the rest of the day, it’s calm and business as usual inside,” Henderson wrote. “Thanks to the @MurrayPoliceUT & other law enforcement agencies for responding and handling the situation so quickly.”

Authorities are still investigating the shooting, which occurred five years to the day after a 2019 gang shooting at the mall injured two people.
