Utah bicyclist dies after tree falls onto her during storm

The 68-year-old woman was riding a bike on a trail in Clearfield.

(Clearfield Police Department) A 68-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell on top of her while she was cycling, according to Clearfield police.

A bicyclist was killed Wednesday when a tree fell on top of her on a Clearfield bike trail.

According to police, the 68-year-old woman was riding on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Rail Trail between 200 South and 300 North as a thunderstorm and strong winds blew though the area. Those winds blew the tree over onto the woman shortly after 7 p.m., a witness told police.

When Clearfield police officers arrived, they found the woman pinned under the fallen tree. Officers were able to lift the tree enough to pull her out from under it, then render aid until medical personnel from the North Davis Fire District arrived, who were able to get her to Holy Cross Hospital — Davis, located in Layton.

She died of her injuries a short time later. Police identified her Thursday afternoon as Rosario Bautista.

“Initial information suggests this was a tragic accident,” police said in a news release.

The trail typically open to walkers, runners, bicyclists, rollerbladers and more remained closed in Clearfield between 200 South and 300 North on Thursday as crews cleared out debris from fallen trees in the area, according to police. The trail will remain closed Friday as well.
