Man dies after crashing car into downtown Clearfield apartment building

Police believe the man may have suffered a medical episode while driving.

(Clearfield Police) A 40-year-old man died in Clearfield on Thursday night after he crashed into an apartment building, police said.

A 40-year-old man was killed Thursday night when his vehicle crashed into an apartment building near downtown Clearfield.

Clearfield Police responded to the crash at about 8:20 at 101 N Main Street, where they found the man unconscious behind the wheel. According to a news release from the department, the vehicle had “crashed into the wall and had flung inside the building.”

First responders attempted life-saving measures but the man was later pronounced dead at a Layton hospital.

Occupants on the fourth floor of the building felt the crash’s impact, but residents did not have to evacuate, and no other injuries were reported.

Police believe the man may have suffered a medical episode or fell asleep while driving, since there were no obvious signs of impairment.

A witness indicated that the vehicle was driving normally on the heavily-trafficked street, but that the car did not turn with the roadway’s bend before it crashed into the building.

The case remains under investigation pending a report from the Medical Examiner’s Office, police said in a release.
