Salt Lake City police looking for suspect in deadly shooting downtown Sunday morning

A 21-year-old man was killed.

Police are searching for a suspect in connection with a shooting in downtown Salt Lake City that left one man dead.

Witnesses said Roy Anthony Duran, 20, fled the scene of the Sunday morning shooting before officers arrived, according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

Isaiah Valerio, 21, died at the scene, police said.

At about 1:23 a.m. Sunday, 911 dispatchers were notified of a shooting near 500 West and 600 South in Salt Lake City. When officers responded, they found Valerio in critical condition and began performing life-saving procedures, police said, but he died.

The shooting stemmed from “a disturbance of some sort,” according to preliminary information.

Police believe that several other witnesses to the shooting may have fled the area before officers arrived. Salt Lake City Police Department asks that anyone with information about the case, or photos or videos of the moments that led up to the shooting, to call 801-799-3000 and reference case number 21-195834.

Duran, who should be considered armed and dangerous, police said, has tattoos on his right forearm and hand, along with one on his neck below his right ear. Anyone who knows about Duran’s whereabouts should immediately call 911, according to police.
