Salt Lake City Police arrest person allegedly in possession of a firearm at City Creek Center

The Salt Lake City Police Department arrested an individual who was allegedly in possession of a firearm at the City Creek shopping center downtown Friday, according to a news release.

A Unified Police officer was working an overtime security shift at the center when they alerted SLCPD about a person loitering on the grounds who was potentially in possession of a firearm around 1:20 p.m., the release states.

Security issued a formal trespass notice to the individual, but the person returned to the shopping mall for a second time later in the day, police said. The individual made statements to security that they had access to a weapon, the release states. Security guards then notified the Unified Police officer, who contacted SLCPD to arrest the individual.

SLCPD officials said the person, a 31-year-old from Texas, was arrested and taken into custody at the Salt Lake City Public Safety Building without incident. Officers recovered a firearm during the investigation, according to the release.

The intent of the individual remains under investigation, police said, and criminal charges are pending. The identity of the person and the type of firearm they were allegedly in possession of is not being released at this time.
