Grantsville police say the man an officer shot and killed on Aug. 25 was Rodney Barton, 42.
According to police, Barton was wanted in connection with an Internet Crimes Against Children case, and he was shot when he allegedly “charged officers with a knife” after a traffic stop.
Police said that when they first tried to stop Barton, he drove away. After a “brief pursuit” on S.R. 112 between Tooele and Erda, Barton was stopped, got out of the car, raised a knife, and one of the officers shot him.
Despite life-saving efforts, Barton died at the scene. The shooting remains under investigation.
