Trader Joe’s is opening a location in Riverdale, the company recently acknowledged on its website — something the Weber County town’s mayor announced six months ago.
What the supermarket chain still isn’t announcing is when it will open. The website’s June 24 post said only “coming soon.” However, the company historically doesn’t acknowledge a new location until shortly before it opens.
The Riverdale location, at 4060 Riverdale Road across from the Newgate Mall, was a Shopko store before that company went bankrupt in 2019.
Riverdale Mayor Braden Mitchell announced in December that the grocery chain would be opening a location this summer. At a Christmas-themed announcement, a man dressed as Santa Claus delivered a large gift-wrapped sign to the mayor. When Mitchell removed the wrapping, the sign read “Trader Joe’s: Coming in 2025.”
The Riverdale location will be the sixth Trader Joe’s store in Utah. Locations are already open in Cottonwood Heights, Draper and Orem, as well as two in Salt Lake City: at 634 E. 400 South near Trolley Square and at 2160 S. 700 East in Sugar House.
A seventh Utah location is in the works at 1895 E. Rodeo Walk Drive in Holladay, on the former site of the Cottonwood Mall, which was demolished in 2008.
The Holladay location was divulged when the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s commission approved the store’s application for an off-premises beer retailer license on May 29. At the time, a Trader Joe’s spokesperson said in a statement that it did “not have a location confirmed for Holladay.”
