BYU might have to find a way to move the ball without LJ Martin against Iowa State.
BYU coach Kalani Sitake said Monday that star running back LJ Martin is doubtful for this weekend’s game. Martin, the 2025 Big 12 offensive player of the year, went out in the first half of the win over TCU with an apparent lower-leg injury. He didn’t return.
There’s more bad news: Linebacker Isaiah Glasker, who exited after taking a hit during an interception return, is also doubtful.
“We’re still evaluating … and will probably get more information,” Sitake said. “Right now, it looks doubtful for both of them.”
Martin has rushed for 344 yards and three touchdowns, and Glasker has 16 tackles this season.
It’s the latest in a string of bad injury updates for BYU. The Cougars are already without key contributors running back Sione Moa, right tackle Andrew Gentry, safety Raider Damuni and linebacker Siale Esera.
If Martin can’t go, the Cougars will likely lean on senior Preston Rex and freshmen Journee Tonga and Devaughn Eka.
Oh, as the TCU game showed, quarterback Bear Bachmeier could see more reps in the running game, too. Bachmeier had 15 carries against the Horned Frogs after recording just 12 in BYU’s first three games.
Sitake expressed confidence that his rushing game will still be productive if Martin is indeed out.
“It’s not ideal going into games with possibly having your first and second running back be out,” Sitake said. “But we feel like we’ve narrowed the gap quite a bit from one to two to three, and then we have a committee of guys who can do it.”
It wasn’t all bleak updates, though: Sitake said defensive back and kick returner Cannon DeVries was “probable” to play against the Cyclones. DeVries also left the win over TCU.
BYU and Iowa State kick off Friday at 8:15 p.m. MDT in Provo.
