Eye on the Y: Jimmer Fredette taking on new role as he represents Team USA’s 3-on-3 World Cup squad

Plus The Tribune’s weekly roundup of news and notes from around the Big 12 conference

(Lynne Sladky | AP) Jimmer Fredette spins the basketball during practice for the USA Basketball 3x3 national team, Monday, Oct. 31, 2022, in Miami Lakes, Fla.

Normally Jimmer Fredette isn’t an inexperienced newcomer to any basketball team.

But this week the former BYU star will be just that as he represents Team USA in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup in Austria.

Fredette, BYU’s all-time leading scorer with 2,599 career points, will be the fourth man on the roster. The other three — Kareem Maddox, Dylan Travis and Canyon Barry — all have played in 3x3 World Cups or professional tournaments before.

Fredette’s experience in 3x3 only dates back to last year, when he participated in the AmeriCup, hitting the game-winning shot against Puerto Rico.

“He is kind of the firecracker of the team,” Barry said in a Team USA introduction video. “He obviously doesn’t have that 3x3 experience. But Jimmer Fredette the name speaks for itself. It is really refreshing to see someone that talented, has that name and pedigree, come put his head down and really want to work.”

In the group stage, Team USA plays:

• Latvia (Wednesday, 9:10 a.m. MT)

• Australia (Wednesday, 11:20 a.m.)

• Slovenia (Friday, 11:20 a.m.)

• Austria (Friday, 1:20 p.m.)

The tournament’s quarterfinals are set for Saturday. The semifinals and final will be played on June 4.

Games will be streamed on YouTube.
