Letter: Are Republicans so done with democracy they’re willing to let Trump compromise classified documents?

(Chris Samuels | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes speaks in his office on Wednesday, July 7, 2021.

What continues to be lost in the usual “spin and distract” of the classified documents seized from Mar-a-Lago isn’t whether the documents were classified or declassified. The facts are that these documents are the property of the United States government and not Donald Trump.

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes and those who seek to defend Trump continue to distract you with whether Trump had declassified them. It doesn’t matter. He/they don’t want you to pay attention to this most central fact. Trump was no longer president when he left the White House and thus had no right to take these top secret documents. Taking something without knowledge or permission is stealing. It’s not an innocent mistake. Taking 15 boxes is deliberate and planned. It’s a calculated scheme to take possession of classified material and use it for his own personal gain.

This is treason.

Republicans: Are you really so done with democracy that you’re willing to let Trump sell away our most tightly protected intelligence? Why don’t you care about our country anymore? How is this better?

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
