Letter: Once the enemy was war, now it’s the pandemic

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Shoppers and commuters wear masks in downtown Salt Lake City, Monday, Nov. 30, 2020.

When the United States declared war on Germany, Italy and Japan in 1941, I was fifteen and remember the war well. Europe had fallen to the Nazis and enemy submarines were sinking our ships in the Atlantic in great numbers.  Britain was losing the battle. The draft was enacted and five members of my family actively served.

Women filled jobs  previously held by men. Many items were rationed, including dairy products, meat, rubber and gasoline. And new cars were unattainable.  Civilian travel was banned.

Today the enemy is the pandemic.

We need to follow the guidelines and mask up. The life you save may be a loved one or even your own.
