Letter: Let’s be more precise with labels

(Carolyn Kaster | AP file photo) President-elect Joe Biden answers a reporter's question at The Queen theater, Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020, in Wilmington, Del.

Having spoken to some Republican friends recently, I am now keenly aware that the label of “socialism” that Republicans skillfully attached to Biden/Harris and that the Democrats were weak to counter was probably the most significant factor for the closeness of this election. It was so similar to the Red Scare of the 1950s. I think it is necessary at this time for the Democrats to convey where they stand as well as to label where Republicans stand when speaking about economic structure.

I do think that if we all take a good hard look at our economic principles, the very large majority of Americans would say they are capitalists. Where we differ is in how we implement capitalism and how much of a social safety net we want to have. While using one or two words to describe principles is anathema to me, it appears to be necessary to convey messages in the United States. I offer up these labels: Trumpism = reactionary capitalism; Bidenism = progressive capitalism. Now let’s move on, compromise, and welcome America back to the world.
