Letter: Having a plan makes all the difference

(Elise Amendola | AP) In this Feb. 7, 2020, photo, Democratic presidential candidate entrepreneur Andrew Yang speaks during a Democratic presidential primary debate at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H.

While the U.S. may not be ready for Andrew Yang’s idea for universal basic income, perhaps it is time to set up the framework for doing it.

Right now, the government is struggling to figure out how to get money to millions of Americans to help cushion the damage brought on by the almost total shutdown of the economy. If we had the framework to support the vision of Yang’s UBI already in place, getting that money out would be much simpler, and more importantly, much quicker.

While such a framework will take time and money and will not help in the near future for fighting the COVID-19 economic challenge, having it in place will help for the next similar emergency.

If we have learned one thing from our lack of readiness for the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is that having a well-thought-out plan can make all the difference. In this case a good plan would not only have saved countless lives, but minimized the economic damage.
