Letter: Uses for that $100 billion

FILE- In this Jan. 3, 2018, file photo, the angel Moroni statue, silhouetted against the sky, sits atop the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at Temple Square, in Salt Lake City. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019, defended how it uses and invests member donations after a former church employee charged in a complaint to the Internal Revenue Service that the faith had improperly built a $100 billion investment portfolio using member donations that are supposed to go to charitable causes. I am anxiously awaiting the wonderful news from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that it has agreed to use some of its $100 billion rainy day/Apocalypse fund to give generously to people who have lost their jobs, renters who can’t pay their rent and to purchase personal protective equipment for hospitals and clinics. It’s not just raining, it’s pouring.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
