Letter: BYU’s Honor Code was changed just for show

(Leah Hogsten | Tribune file photo) Brigham Young University LGBTQ students took their concerns about the school's policy reversal regarding romantic behavior by same-sex couples to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints office building, Mar. 6, 2020. Despite removing the section on "homosexual behavior" from BYU Honor Code last month, The LDS Church has clarified for the first time that same-sex romantic behavior is still "not compatible" with the rules at BYU.

To the National Dance Council of America: Do not be deceived. Brigham Young University is not a place where your freedom to dance lives. Many students at BYU were temporarily deceived. Now it is clear that the change to the “Honor Code” was made to ensure that BYU could continue to host the NDCA Championship competition. Brigham Young University is not a place where freedom or honor lives.

To the students who felt safe to hold hands, dance and kiss the person of their choice, your joy was beautiful to see. Find a truly safe place to live and love. Beware of coercive compassion.
