Letter: This was Romney’s finest hour

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) A rally and chocolate milk toast to Sen. Mitt Romney at the state Capitol in Salt Lake City on Friday, Feb. 28, 2020. Mormon Women for Ethical Government and other groups organized the rally.

Just over two weeks ago, I was fortunate to observe a rebroadcast of Sen. Mitt Romney’s explanation of his vote in the Senate impeachment trial declaring President Donald Trump guilty of abuse of power.

I believe that his reasoning was impeccable, both from a logical point of view and from the standpoint of constitutional law. Utahns should be proud that we have a senator who has not sacrificed his judgment or his integrity on the altar of political expediency. If there was ever any doubt as to the probity of Romney’s conclusion, I trust that it has been removed by the nauseating spectacle of Trump’s ongoing Stalinesque purge of the intelligence community since his acquittal by the Republican sycophants in the U.S. Senate.
