Letter: Only Romney lived up to this oath

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Caroline Phinney joins others gathered in support of Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, at the Wallace F. Bennett Federal Building in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020, after he voted to convict President Donald Trump of abuse of power. The Utah senator was the only Republican to vote guilty on the first article of impeachment.

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines patriot as, “one who loves and loyally or zealously supports one’s own country.” Note the words “one’s own country” not “one’s political party.”

It also defines an oath as “a solemn usually formal calling upon God or a god to witness to the truth of what one says or to witness that one sincerely intends to do what one says.”

The federal oath of office is: “I, ___, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”

Sen. Mitt Romney was the only Republican senator who honored that oath. Sen. Mike Lee voted for his job, his party’s support and their money for his re-election bid.

Every Utah GOP congressman also made a mockery of their oath, the law, our Constitution, our Founding Fathers and themselves for the same reason as Lee.

Lee and Utah’s GOP representatives are one example of what’s wrong with America. They had an opportunity to, as Trump said so many times, “Make America great again,” but they voted for their party rather than our Constitution.

For all but one of Utah’s federal GOP office-holders, the “for sale” sign is clearly out. This November, remember what our federal GOP representatives did and vote them out of office. Let them know that we value our Constitution more than they do, even if it means voting for a democrat.

Mike Lee runs again in 2022.

Also keep in mind that all of our major GOP gubernatorial candidates said they’d back Trump in 2020.
