Letter: Don’t give the Republicans’ argument equal weight
(Julio Cortez | AP) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Ky., right, arrives at the Capitol in Washington during the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, Friday, Jan. 24, 2020.
The press seems to give equal weight to the Republican charge that Democrats are trying to throw the 2020 election via impeachment. But that argument would make sense only if the Democrats had fabricated the evidence driving the current Senate trial.
The evidence exists independent of Democrat or Republican actions. It must be genuinely and fully considered in terms of whether our president solicited foreign interference in our national election, and if so, whether this warrants removal from office.
By giving equal weight to a Republican charge that effectively throws sand in people’s eyes, the press enables senators to abdicate their solemn duty to consider the available evidence and deliberate meaningfully.
