Letter: If Republicans believe in racism, they should just say so
(Alex Brandon | AP) President Donald Trump points to a reporter for a questions as he speaks with reporters on the South Lawn of the White House before departing Friday, July 19, 2019, in Washington.
Donald Trump called out four freshman congresswomen — women of color — suggesting they were not Americans and should leave if they don’t like it here. Unsurprisingly, the GOP has been largely silent.
I read an online analysis by Chris Cillizza of CNN suggesting what we’ve heard before — that members of Congress fear Trump’s wrath and either hide or twist themselves into a knot saying that what Trump said is not what Trump said.
I would like to offer another alternative — that silence is agreement.
Hey GOP, just own it! If you believe in racism, bigotry, xenophobia, if you think only American-born whites are welcome here, then step right up and say so. Be proud white nationalists.
Utah’s elected officials, what say you?
