Letter: Questions about U. campus murder

(Rick Bowmer | The Associated Press) In this Nov. 10, 2018, file photo, a photograph of University of Utah student and track athlete Lauren McCluskey, who was fatally shot on campus, is projected on the video board before the start of an NCAA college football game between Oregon and Utah in Salt Lake City. A gun law proposal inspired by the shooting death of McCluskey stalled again Monday, March 11, 2019, after state lawmakers disagreed on whether gun owners should be held liable when loaned firearms are used in a crime.

Thank you, Professor Ron Mittelhammer, for your column “Still no accountability at the U. for murder on campus.” A brilliant and well reasoned response to the murder of Lauren McCluskey on the University of Utah campus.

University President Ruth Watkins and campus police have seemingly shrugged off Lauren’s murder. “Nothing could have prevented the crime,” they say.

Not true, people. Lauren and her family called campus police something like 22 times for help about the crazy man stalking her. What did they do about it? Nothing.

I want to know:

  1. Who specifically took Lauren’s calls? Is there a phone log? Were the calls recorded?
  2. Or did the calls just go to voicemail and nobody ever checked?
  3. What do the phone-answering people at U. police actually do? Sit at a desk and play video games?
  4. Or was it, "Oh, God, it’s that McCluskey chick complaining again. Blow her off.”

I want the people there at phone-answering level to step up publicly and explain how do you live with yourselves.
