Letter: Hatch already has plenty of money

(Bill Clark | CQ Roll Call | The Associated Press) Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, speaks with Roll Call in his office on Dec. 11, 2018, as he prepares to depart the U.S. Senate.

To former Sen. Orrin Hatch:

I am reading an article in The Salt Lake Tribune that you want $2 million from taxpayers to pay for your office building and center for your history.

May I suggest that, instead of taking tax dollars from us, that you use the millions of dollars you received from Big Pharma for the past 10 or 15 years to pay for the darn thing? You have taken way more money than you will ever again need.

Oh, and use some of the rest your money in your war chest instead of supporting conservative hacks in future elections. If you have any doubts on the validity of this claim, just go to Opensecrets.org and check. You already have the money.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
