Letter: Grateful for Girl Scouts of Utah
(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Liz Nicole and Annika spray water from a firehoses while competing in a fire fighter skills relay, while attending Camp Fury. A dozen Utah Girl Scouts participated in a 3-day camp led by female firefighters. Camp Fury Utah was developed in partnership with the Girl Scouts and local fire and police departments, designed to expose teen girls to careers in public safety and other non-traditional jobs. Kathy Stephenson’s Feb. 2 article encourages me to be happy for a young girl joining a new Boy Scout troop for girls.
I am also grateful for the years that our family has thrived thanks to Girl Scouts of Utah. Our GSU adventures have included Dutch oven and solar cooking, camping, scorpion hiking, cross country skiing in Bryce Canyon, service to others and long trips through the Canadian Rockies and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts of the USA in 1912 (eight years before women won the right to vote in America). Girls have learned to "Be Prepared" ever since.
Ladies, consider joining gsutah.org. That other plan for "separate but equal" has not worked so well in the past.
