A Weber School District teacher and her family of eight were trapped inside a burning home early Thursday, and the “devastating” blaze killed her husband and three of her children, fire officials said.
“There are no words to adequately describe the sadness of such a loss,” Weber School District said in a statement Thursday. “For a mother to lose her husband and three children is beyond heartbreaking.”
The teacher and two other children were injured and are being treated, while another child remained in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon, Riverdale Fire Chief Matthew Hennessy said at a news conference.
“Our hearts and thoughts are going out with this family right now,” Hennessy said.
The district said grief counselors will be available at Burch Creek Elementary and Bonneville High School for students and staff “who may be struggling with this loss.” Support will also be available at Riverdale Elementary and T.H. Bell Jr. High School.
“We understand that this will affect each of these school communities,” the district said, “and will remain attentive to the needs of our students, staff, and families.”
The fire broke out around 1:46 a.m. at a home near 4600 South and 1100 West, Hennessy said. When crews arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames.
Crews quickly pulled the people trapped inside from the home and began resuscitation efforts, Hennessy said. But despite those efforts, the three children and father died from their injuries, he said.
Fire officials had not released the victims’ identities as of Thursday afternoon. A vigil is planned for the family at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse at 1056 W. 4400 South, where the family attends, Hennessy said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
