A brush fire Monday afternoon closed a well-traveled connection between Interstate 80 and Interstate 215 at the mouth of Parleys Canyon, causing major delays during rush hour.

The Utah Department of Transportation reported on X that the ramp from eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215 at Parleys Canyon was shut down because of the fire affecting the roadway.

Crews largely handled the fire within a couple of hours, United Fire Authority spokesperson Nate Cochran told Fox13 on Monday evening. Firefighters were planning to remain, he said, to douse any hot spots.

UDOT said drivers would encounter delays in the area, and were urged to use an alternate route.

Dubbed the Millcreek Fire, the blaze moved east through Tanner Park in Millcreek, according to Utah Fire Info. Tanner Park includes a popular off-leash dog park that runs through a nature preserve.

No cause has been determined, Cochran said.

The fire was in a steep gully, making access difficult for fire crews.

Unified Fire deployed water tenders, their own and from neighboring agencies, to bring water to the scene, Cochran said. Aircraft also made a few water drops, he said.

Crews were concerned the fire would move into a residential area south of the park, Cochran said, but no structures were harmed.

Part of the I-215 was blocked to make way for fire trucks and other equipment, UDOT’s traffic cameras showed. As of 8:30 p.m. Monday, those cameras showed the ramp had not been reopened to traffic.

Another fire broke out at Parleys Historic Nature Park in Tanner Park on July 12, burning about 4 acres, FOX 13 reported.

Cochran said the burn scar from the July fire acted as a fire break to keep this fire from spreading. So did the park’s walking trails, he said.
