The latest massive Utah wildfire has destroyed more than 68,000 acres in Millard County — and it’s not the only one burning.
That fire, near Fillmore and Kanosh in central Utah, is considered 0% contained. A containment figure marks the percentage of a fire’s perimeter where crews feel confident flames won’t cross.
Called the Widemouth 2 Fire, it had been burning since July 26 at a much smaller acreage, sparked by lightning, officials have said.
But hot, dry, windy conditions allowed it to explode over the weekend — threatening homes and prompting evaucations in southeast Fillmore.
By Monday afternoon, its acreage had doubled to 68,354 acres, up from a Sunday estimate of 36,000 acres burning. That’s now nearly the size of Salt Lake City proper.
Here’s the latest on the other recent Utah wildfires:
• The Black Canyon Fire has burned 500 acres in the Manti-La Sal Mountains, about 16 miles east of Ephraim, straddling the line between Sanpete and Emery counties.
The fire, discovered Thursday, is 0% contained. The Emery County Sheriff’s Office early Monday issued an evacuation order for the Reeder subdivision, urging property owners to evacuate by 6 p.m.
• A new blaze, the Dodge Fire, was spotted Monday in San Juan County, about 10 miles southeast of Monticello, Utah Fire Info reported on its Facebook page. The fire was only 2 or 3 acres, burning in pinyon and juniper, but it threatened nearby structures.
• The Johnson Canyon Fire (in Box Elder County, north of Tremonton) has burned through 6,889 acres as of late Sunday. The fire was considered 65% contained, and the Box Elder County Fire Department said readiness warnings for evacuation in Washakie and Portage had been lifted.
• The Canyon Road Fire, in Logan’s eastern foothills, ignited over the weekend and spread to about 30 acres total, according to Utah Fire Info. Evacuations ordered Friday evening in neighborhoods near the fire were later lifted.
