A major construction project is set to cut off a key route this week for many Utahns heading home from Salt Lake City International Airport.

Starting at 8 p.m. Monday and running through 5 a.m. Wednesday, the Utah Department of Transportation will completely shut down the ramp that carries eastbound drivers on Interstate 80 to southbound Interstate 215. The project is the latest in a long-running effort to replace and repair bridges along the beltway.

“During the closure, crews will pave the ramp connections,” UDOT spokesperson Mitch Shaw said in a news release, “replace barriers and restripe the road.”

The other three ramps linking I-80 to I-215 near the airport remain closed from a phase of the construction project that is already underway, complicating how drivers who travel through the area will get to and from Tooele and Davis counties, as well as the Wasatch canyons and downtown.

Two of those ramps — linking eastbound I-80 to northbound I-215 and westbound I-80 to northbound I-215 — are set to reopen July 20. The third ramp, leading from westbound I-80 to southbound I-215, isn’t expected to open until mid-August.

The work on the interchange is part of a three-year project that started in 2025 and has created headaches for Utahns trying to get to and from the airport. UDOT urged drivers to follow posted detours when traveling through the interchange.

When the whole project is complete next year, contractors will have replaced 18 bridges, repaired another dozen and repaved much of I-215’s stretch from State Route 201 to North Temple.

Some roads near the I-80 and I-215 interchange near the airport are also under construction. North Temple is set to see a full closure from Redwood Road to 2200 West starting Friday night and running through the morning of July 20. The ramp to northbound I-215 from Redwood Road is closed until next summer, while the ramp to southbound I-215 from Redwood Road will reopen next week.
