Suspect arrested in fatal shooting at South Salt Lake strip club

He is accused of robbing the business just before the fatal shooting.

Police have arrested a man suspected of shooting and killing another man at a South Salt Lake strip club over the weekend.

The shooting at the Southern X-Posure Showclub at 3420 State St. was reported at 12:10 a.m. Saturday. When officers arrived, they found a man had been shot twice. Cherokee Aiko, 26, of Kearns, was taken to a hospital, where he died from his wounds.

According to a probable cause statement, the 36-year-old suspect committed an aggravated robbery at the club just before the shooting. He was captured on the club’s surveillance video holding a handgun, and the car he was driving was also seen in the footage.

At about 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, the vehicle was located at a motel at 1659 W. North Temple. According to police, the suspect was registered there.

While police were investigating, a woman arrived at the shelter to pick up her vehicle, which the suspect had been driving. She told police the suspect had a handgun.

Officers took the suspect into custody and, according to the probable cause statement, he gave them a false name. When police served a search warrant and searched the suspect’s belongings, a handgun that had been stolen in Colorado and matched the caliber of the shell casings found at the club was found, along with an unspecified quantity of marijuana.

The suspect refused to speak to police and asked for an attorney. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and felony discharged of a firearm, all first-degree felonies, as well as theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, possession of a controlled substance, and giving false information to an officer. He is being held without bail pending formal charges.

The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name suspects until they have been charged with a crime.
