A Sandy man was killed when he fell 400 feet while hiking in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
According to Unified Police, Jed Homer, 68, was hiking down from the summit of Mount Raymond in the Butler Fork Area with a friend when he slipped and fell. His friend climbed down and discovered that Homer had suffered a fatal head injury.
Later Wednesday afternoon, a Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team helped the friend down the mountain, and a Department of Public Safety helicopter hoisted Homer’s body from where he fell.
According to police, both men were experienced hikers and the death was a “tragic accident.”
