(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Ryan Mellor, Division Chief at Salt Lake City Fire Department gives an update on a suspected arson fire at an abandoned dry cleaner business at the corner of 800 South 200 West in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020.

Firefighters believe an arsonist is to blame for a fire that destroyed a dry cleaners in downtown Salt Lake City and sent thick black smoke skyward on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the Salt Lake City Fire Department said the dry cleaning building could have been torched by same person who set off two previous fires in the area Wednesday morning.

The fire was at 200 West and 900 South. About 45 firefighters responded to the blaze at the one-story building that was “supposedly vacant." The investigation is still ongoing.

“They have a suspect that they’re interested in and they’re looking for, but we’re not giving any information about that right now,” Ryan Mellow, the fire department spokesman, said.
