Emergency responders recovered the body of a 34-year-old Uintah county man who drowned while saving a child at Red Fleet State Park near Vernal on Wednesday.

Dustin Peterson of Uintah County was boating with family and friends in a Red Fleet Reservoir just before 3 p.m. on ]when a child in the group began to struggle in the water. Peterson jumped in and helped those who remained on the boat to pull the child back aboard, but was unable remain afloat himself.

Neither Peterson nor the child was was a life jacket.

Other members of the group contacted authorities, and search and rescue teams from several agencies responded. At about 10 p.m., the Department of Public Safety dive team located Peterson’s body in approximately 40 feet of water.

The case remains under investigation.
