Failed power line ignites fire above Farmington

Fire crews from Farmington City and Kaysville battled a grass fire started by a failed power line on Sunday.

The fire is located on BLM land on the north side of Shepard Creek near Farmington. Farmington City Fire Department Chief Guido Smith said it was about a mile-and-a-half from the nearest structures and burning in light fuels.

At 5 p.m. the fire had burned about a 2 acre-by-1-acre swath.

Smith said the local fire departments are coordinating with state and federal agencies whose responses have been delayed because the fire is taking place about two weeks before the typical start of fire season.

He said if conditions persist, the fire should be under control within 12 hours.
