One of two Utah men killed at a Halloween party near Roosevelt shot the other to death before he was stabbed to death, according to the the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the house near 1250 W. 850 North about 12:15 a.m. on Nov. 1 and found two bodies. Investigators believe “based on information available at this time” that John Reed Jr., 22, went to the party and shot Tyrell Sowsonicut, 23, according to a news release from the sheriff.

Witnesses told investigators that after the shooting, “other partygoers stepped in … and Reed was stabbed during the ensuing altercation.”

Police did not say why Reed shot Sowsonicut but said the motive is under investigation. Detectives are also investigating the possibility that Reed’s death “could be the result of self-defense.”

The sheriff’s office reiterated that investigators believe there is no “ongoing threat” to the public. Investigators asked that anyone with any information contact the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Indian Affairs police or the FBI.
