Salt Lake City day care worker allegedly admits to ‘slamming’ a baby onto the bathroom floor and breaking his legs

A Salt Lake City day care worker has been arrested on charges of child abuse for allegedly breaking a baby boy’s legs last week.

The 66-year-old woman had been watching the boy — who is younger than a year old, according to Salt Lake City police Detective Greg Wilking — at a day care she runs out of her Salt Lake City home.

After her arrest on Monday, the woman admitted to “slamming the child down on the bathroom floor, feet first,” according to court documents.

She also reportedly told investigators that she would “rather be deported than go to jail,” court documents state.

Salt Lake City police investigators don’t ask suspects what their immigration status is, according to Wilking, who added he doesn’t know to which country the woman referred.

The child was taken to Primary Children’s Hospital on Friday, the day after the abuse. Hospital workers determined that the baby’s legs were both broken below the knees.

The woman was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on Monday, on suspicion of intentionally inflicting a serious physical injury, a second-degree felony, but has since been released.

The day care the woman runs with a family member at 714 W. 400 North is unlicensed, according to Wilking. The two had been responsible for watching multiple children, he said.
