Real Salt Lake’s slump continues with loss to New York City

A 2-0 defeat extends RSL’s winless streak to 11 games.

A once-promising season for Real Salt Lake has gone south, along with the club’s position in the Major League Soccer standings.

New York City FC beat RSL 2-0 on Saturday night at America First Field in Sandy, extending the Utah club’s MLS winless streak to 11 games.

The loss leaves RSL at 8-10-5 and in 10th place in the Western Conference, one spot shy of the postseason with 10 regular-season games remaining. The club’s 5-1-1 start to the season is now a distant memory.

Injuries have played a big part in RSL’s slump; the team listed 13 players on its availability report for Wednesday’s game against the Houston Dynamo.

New York City got goals from Nico Fernandez (41st minute) and Luighi (62nd minute) in its win Saturday night, and improved to 8-9-8, good for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

RSL is scheduled to return to action against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, Sept. 19 (7:30 p.m., Apple TV). Vancouver, last season’s MLS Cup runner-up, is 14-5-4 and in first place in the Western Conference.
