RSL beats Dallas 2-1 behind late goals from Kreilach, Rusnák

Coming off the bench, RSL’s Justin Meram delivers two assists

(Stewart F. House | The Dallas Morning News via AP) FC Dallas forward Franco Jara (29) and Real Salt Lake midfielder Nick Besler (13) battle for the ball during the first half of an MLS soccer game, Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021 in Frisco, Texas.

Frisco, Texas • Damir Kreilach and Albert Rusnák each scored in the final 10 minutes and Real Salt Lake beat FC Dallas 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Kreilach scored his 15th goal of the season for Salt Lake (13-12-6) to tie it in the 80th. Rusnák put a low shot inside the far post off a feed from Justin Meram for the go-ahead goal.

“Heart and desire,” Rusnák said during his walk-off interview. “We spoke about mentality the last couple of weeks. Things haven’t been easy. A mistake by us gives them a lead and then a road game is always difficult.”

Meram came off the bench to assist on both of RSL’s goals.

“He changed the game,” Rusnák said. “This is what you want from your substitutions. They’re fresh and make an immediate impact, but it’s not easy to find the rhythm of the game.”

RSL, at least for the time being, moved about the playoff line with the win. The team sat in seventh place in the West with 45 points.

Matt Hedges scored in the 20th minute for his first MLS goal since the regular-season finale in 2019. Ricardo Pepi, of the U.S. national team, entered in the 82nd and came close to scoring a tying goal for Dallas.

Dallas (6-15-11) has a 10-game winless streak.
