RSL player tests positive for COVID-19

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Socially distanced fans cheer on Real Salt Lake during MLS soccer action between Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders, at Rio Tinto Stadium, Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020.

A Real Salt Lake player has tested positive for the coronavirus, the club announced Friday. The news comes on a day where Utah reached another record in daily COVID-19 cases, reporting 2,987 cases and 17 new deaths.

The player was the only member of the core players and staff to test positive, a club spokesperson said. Those members include first team players and coaches, athletic trainers, equipment staff, media team and front office.

Some staff members outside of that group, however, also tested positive, the spokesperson said.

“Those who have tested positive have been isolated and we are taking the steps in accordance with safety protocols to eliminate/limit spread,” the spokesperson said.

The club said in a statement that players and staff will continue to be closely monitored through the weekend. Sunday’s home game against Sporting Kansas City will continue as scheduled.
