Future murky for Utah Royals midfielder Vero Boquete

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Royals FC midfielder Verónica Boquete (21) as Utah Royals FC hosts Sky Blue FC at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy on Saturday June 15, 2019.

The future of one of Utah Royals FC’s most dynamic players is now uncertain.

Midfielder Vero Boquete, who joined the team in the 2019 season, is one of the Royals players out of contract. But she may not be back in Utah next season after an Instagram post raised questions about her roster status.

“Thanks for every moment, every conversation, every practice, every game and so many lifetime memories,” Boquete wrote in the post earlier this week. “I gonna miss all of you, and I’m gonna miss Utah.”

A spokesperson for the Royals said players are starting to return home now that the 2020 season is over and no roster decisions have been made.

When reached by The Salt Lake Tribune, Boquete said her agent and the Royals are in talks for a possible return, but nothing is certain.

“I don’t know yet what’s going to happen and if I’m going to be back or not next season,” Boquete said.

Boquete recently returned home to Spain, where she did she is recovering from an ankle injury that kept her out of Utah’s final game of the season, a 2-0 loss to the OL Reign. She said she suffered the injury on a tackle during the National Women’s Soccer League Challenge Cup.

There have been some reports that Boquete is in advanced talks to join AC Milan. Boquete did not comment on those reports to The Tribune “because there is nothing yet.”

“I have a few options/teams to play in Europe and I hope to know my future soon,” Boquete added.

Boquete has played 19 games for the Royals in two seasons. She has scored one goal and tallied eight assists.
