BYU junior wide receiver Cody Hagen is done with college football.
“I guess the short answer is that I’m medically retiring,” Hagen confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune on Friday. “A few things went into it, but the majority of the decision comes from me. I tore my PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) back in December and played through it and did spring ball with a brace, but it just never felt like it did before.”
Hagen informed BYU’s coaches last week of his decision after participating in spring camp. Last season, the wide receiver caught 12 passes for 97 receiving yards. He also ran the ball nine times for 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) Brigham Young Cougars wide receiver Cody Hagen (5) played two seasons in Provo.
“We decided to not do surgery, and it healed back together a good amount,” Hagen said. “But there’s still that 15% or 10% of my running — maybe the top 10% of a sprint — that I don’t feel like I ever got back after that, and so that’s kind of what has been super frustrating."
“There are some other things within my knee that are causing it not to heal very well,” he added.
Hagen said he pursued all “legal options” within the NCAA’s framework to heal his PCL injury but couldn’t nurse it back to full health.
“They (BYU’s coaches) have all been super, super great,” Hagen said. “They’re just super nice and understanding. They’ve been super great to work with.
“There was definitely frustration on both sides with my knee not healing. ... The frustration came from me not being able to perform all of spring or workouts, because I can’t necessarily turn on my separating factor between other great players.”
