Pro pickleball tour comes to Utah for annual Tournament of Champions

The tournament is in its 10th year and second as part of the PPA pro tour.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Tracey Swenson of Park City and her doubles partner Kathy Mayberry of Auburn, CA strategize during their game at the Professional Pickleball Association Club Tournament of Champions in Brigham City, Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022. The tournament is back in northern Utah this week.

It’s pickleball season in Utah.

The Tournament of Champions, a flagship tournament for the Carvana Pro Pickleball Association Tour that features the world’s top pros, will be held from Aug. 15-19 in Brigham City. Live coverage will be broadcast on Youtube and CBS Sports.

The Tournament of Champions started in 2013 and was the first professional pickleball tournament to offer prize money and feature certified referees for all matches. The tournament has been held annually in Brigham City since 2015.

The tournament also includes amateur competition, with over 650 athletes enrolled. The Tournament of Champions joined the PPA flagship in 2022.

This year’s event will mark the 10th anniversary of the Tournament of Champions. At last year’s tournament, the player pool included the No. 1-ranked men’s and women’s singles players Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters, who both won singles gold. Waters should have stiff competition from pickleball standouts Hurricane Tyra Black and world No. 3 Catherine Parenteau.

Utah pros Meghan Dizon, Allyce Jones, Tyler Loong, Callie Smith and Spencer Smith are also expected to compete for a share of the $250,000 prize money.

Tickets start at $25 for the five-day event.

Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country with more than 36 million participants, according to the 2023 APP Pickleball Participation Report.
