As the midterms approach, I have some questions for my fellow Americans who identify as Republicans.
I recently canvassed for a state Senate Democratic candidate in my neighborhood and was struck by the realization that the Republican Party is not united — at least the Republican Party in a few neighborhoods in Iron County.
I was surprised to meet Republicans who were firmly opposed to Trump and his actions. They still identify as Republicans and are committed to their party, yet they do not support Trump or his ideals.
I can understand because I have been a staunch Republican almost all my adult life. But I cannot support Donald Trump and, as a registered Republican, I voted for Kamala Harris in the last election. Prior to that I had never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since my first vote at the age of 20, in 1972, which was for George McGovern, who ran against Nixon.
As I ponder this, I’m puzzled by Trump’s slogan. What does “Make America Great Again” mean? I have asked this question many times lately and never, not once, gotten an answer. America is already a great country, despite our problems. Using the word “again,” what is the time we need to go back to, that people consider great?
What I can say is all is not well in the Republican Party and Trump is far from the best we can do. Please vote Nov. 3.
