The new ICE prison is expected to hold 7,500-10,000 detainees. In ordinary prisons, every inmate has a personal toilet and washbasin with water. Will these same basics be provided to the ICE prisoners? They aren’t in other ICE prisons.
If this new local ICE prison fails to provide this minimum level of decency, will that not be “cruel and unusual punishment” (see the Bill of Rights)?
And will Donald Trump and his xenophobic advisor, Stephen Miller, at least compensate us Salt Lake residents for such unplanned water use? What will they do about its impact on the Great Salt Lake?

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.
Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
